Gross Alpha and Gross Beta Activity Concentrations in the Dust Fractions of Urban Surface-Deposited Sediment in Russian Cities

Studies of gross alpha and beta activity in road- surface-deposited sediments were conducted three Russian cities different geographical zones. To perform radiation measurements, new methods applied which allow dealing with low mass volume dust-sized (2–100 ?m) samples obtained after the size fractionation procedure. The 2–10 ?m fraction had highest concentration (GB)—1.32 Bq/g Nizhny Novgorod Rostov-On-Don, while 50–100 was most prominent Ekaterinburg. This can be attributed to presence radionuclides that are transferred through natural anthropogenic processes. (GA) sizes found Rostov-on-Don city within range—0.22 Bq/g. have a higher than 10–50 due partitioning main minerals constituting urban sediment (USDS). Observed dependencies reflect geochemical processes take place during formation transport surface sediments. Developed experimental measurements formed methodological base studies.
